Laura Yordan, a junior at Villa Walsh Academy, decided to study the impact of smell on the effectiveness of studying. Yordan used essential oils during the summer to finish her homework faster and said it helped her concentrate and improved her mood.
She now wants to put her theory to the test.
"... I want high school students to be able to concentrate better, and thus, get better grades," Yordan said of her reasons for doing the expirement.
The Franklin Lakes native is gathering materials but hopes to continue her research soon. She needs diffusers to spread the scent of the oils around a classroom, she said.
Her teachers suggested she try putting the oils in differenct classrooms and have one without it to study as a placebo group.
"I plan to give students a blind survey before the project begins, and then after the research is finished," she said. "I plan to give students another survey, and record the differences to see if the oils impacted the school community."
Once complete Yordan said she plans to write up her research and see if there's any connection to the smells and improved schoolwork.
