Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox said Wyckoff has received a $5,000 grant from the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety that will be used to man checkpoints or roving patrols for DWI enforcement.
The intent of the heightened enforcement is to bring public awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving, and to encourage people to drink responsibly. Fox said thousands of people are killed in the U.S. annually by drunk drivers.
Wyckoff received the grant, the chief said, through the efforts of Lt. Charles Van Dyk of the township’s Traffic Bureau. Fox said Wyckoff is known to be tough on drunk drivers, and “If you are caught driving while intoxicated, you will be arrested!”
Penalties for drunk driving are severe and include license suspension and costly surcharges. The chief suggests if you are going out and know you’ll be drinking, designate someone to drive you home. If you have too much to drink, spend the night and go home when you’re sober. If on foot, get a car service or have a sober friend take you home. And always buckle your seatbelts; buckled drivers and passengers are significantly safer.
