WYCKOFF, N.J. – If Nancy Angelici was your friend, neighbor or family member, you might have a difficult time maintaining your weight.
The Wyckoff chef spent the last few months baking in preparation for the 2016 World Food Championships – where she had the chance to win $100,000 and the title of World Food Champion.
Her taste-testers were been busy eating her creations.
“My one friend … she is always coming over, she says, ‘I love everything you make,’” Angelici said.
She also said her son “has some really good after-school snacks.”
Last month, Angelici, who bakes out of her home, traveled to Orange Beach, Ala., to compete against professional chefs. Although she didn't win top prize, she said the competition went well. “I scored higher than restaurant chefs,” she said.
She baked tasty delights with names like “orange almond blueberry basil essence crapes with white chocolate ganache,” and “caramel apple walnut spice pie-lets with walnut crunch,” and “cannoli cream cheese cake.”
Baking contests are nothing new for Angelici, who has been doing food competitions for about 24 years. Her first was the New Jersey State Fair. She entered a peach pie and blueberry streusel muffins. She was a finalist in the Land O'Lakes best recipe contest, and in another competition, she was six votes shy of getting one of her recipes on the menu of Perkins.
“I have been entering and entering and competing. Once you do it, that is it. There is no going back,” she said.
Angelici said she is considering conducting private cooking lessons. But what she really wants is to be on television.
“I would love a cooking show. I am working on that,” she said.
