Meanwhile, a separate system that could get a boost from Tropical Storm Sara may arrive around the same time.
The system will bring areas of snow and strong winds over the Great Lakes region in the days ahead, according to AccuWeather.com.
Rainfall from the storm and a cold front are expected to arrive on the East Coast on Wednesday night, November 20.
"The more obvious conditions from the storm, depending on its intensity, will be a period of strong winds centered on the Great Lakes but expanding through much of the Midwest and into the East," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
Rain is likely to continue throughout the day on Thursday, November 21, with showers possibly lingering into Friday, November 22, according to the National Weather Service.
As the cold front approaches, a secondary storm could also form along quickly along the East Coast, tapping into tropical moisture streaming across the Gulf of Mexico from Sara, AccuWeather says.
There is some uncertainty surrounding the exact timing of both systems and more forecast models will develop in the coming days.
Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 28.
