Shortly before 7 p.m., police were called to the parking lot of the Home Depot on Springfield Avenue, where a man, later identified as Marcus Perkins of Lindenwold, demanded the keys from person who was loading his vehicle. Perkins threatened the man with a broken bottle, police said.

The victim fled and Perkins ran towards Maplewood, according to police. An off-duty officer working security spotted Perkins in the parking lot of Whole Foods and Target and notified police by radio. The officer tried to stop Perkins, who stabbed the officer with the bottle, police said. The bottle hit the officer's vest.

Perkins fled and ended up in the vehicle of the man he'd tried to carjack minutes earlier. The unoccupied vehicle was left running in the Whole Foods parking lot as the victim followed Perkins while talking to police on the phone, authorities said.

A second officer arrived on scene and wrestled Perkins from the vehicle. Perkins tried to grab the officer's gun as he was being cuffed, according to police.

Both officers were treated for injuries and released.

Perkins faces charges of carjacking, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, attempting to disarm a police officer and weapons offenses.
