More than 425 people came from all over Westchester and the New York City metro area to watch the game. It was organized by Susan Granata, the student council advisor at ALMS, and ALMS teachers Colleen O'Reilly, Karen Johnson and Aysha Williams, according to a release from the City School District of New Rochelle.
New Rochelle police officers, teachers and special guests played the Harlem Wizards in a basketball game full of twists and surprises, the release said. Williams made three-point shots, and Granata scored a basket as well. New Rochelle's finest made the game exciting during the third quarter when they closed the scoring gap with their great moves and shots.
ALMS Principal John Barnes served as referee, and Assistant Principal Patrick Keevins was the home team coach.
The Harlem Wizards won the game 102-86.
The game was a lot of fun, with special tricks, hoops and alley-oops provided by the Harlem Wizards, the release said.
Austin Woods, Darcel Minton-Woods' 4-year-old grandson, was a featured half-time activity winner. In addition, students and guests were involved in all the action and were asked to join the Harlem Wizards on the court before the game, between quarters and at half-time.
Proceeds from the game will offset the NewRo's U-Knighted Pride Step Team's trip to Memphis, Tenn., to participate in the national competition, and the Model UN's trip to Vancouver.
The ALMS Student Council will use a portion of the money to fund student activities.
