The last “Walk to School with the Mayor,” will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 8:25 a.m. to Slyvan Kindergarten Center. The public and students are welcome to meet DeSalvo at Lincoln Park at the corner of Lincoln Avenue.

The campaign began when DeSalvo took office three years ago with the goal of promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Walks are held every Wednesday in May and October. To date there have been 28 walks.

“It’s a good opportunity to get out with the children and teach them about why they should walk to school instead of having their parents drop them off,” DeSalvo said. “I hope to see more kids walk to school.”

DeSalvo said the borough’s walk program was awarded a couple weeks ago by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Meadowlink for the Safe Routes to School programs.

“The purpose of the walks is to show them a safe route to school where they are very visible and also for health reasons,” said Rutherford Recreation Director Barbara Bennett.
