TEANECK, N.J. -- The 18-week Teaneck election season officially began with five people picking up nominating petitions indicating they plan to become candidates as of Wednesday morning.

Three Township Council seats are at stake -- those currently held by incumbents Henry J. Pruitt, Mark J. Schwartz and former Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin.

Pruitt and Schwartz picked up petitions Monday and Tuesday, respectively. The other potential candidates are Michael Pagan, Chondra Young and Stephen Gruber. Pagan has worked for U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg and the Bergen County Democratic Organization, and is currently the public information officer for Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco.

Young, a tax preparer, is a political ally of Councilman Jason Castle and has been co-president of the Teaneck Council of Parents and Teachers (PTO/A).

Gruber is a relatively recent resident and runs a Facebook page called “Teaneck -- End the Madness,” a watchdog group that comments on township issues and advocates transparency, integrity and responsible spending.

Insiders say voters can expect at least seven to nine candidates for the three seats. Meanwhile, Chamber of Commerce director Jennifer Glass made it known that she was interested by posting a message on her Facebook page Dec. 30 asking whether she could count on voter support if she runs.
