TEANECK, N.J. — Teaneck officials will rededicate the township's former police building to administrative offices on Sunday.

An 11 a.m. open house celebration on the Township Green will precede a 1 p.m. commemorative plaque dedication at the facility, located at the corner of Cedar Lane and Teaneck Road.

"[It's been an] abandoned building with chipped paint sitting at the most prominent corner in town," Deputy Mayor Elie Y. Katz said.

The new facilities will hold offices for the Teaneck manager, clerk, human resources department and health department, Township Secretary Helen Zbierski said.

Although a final accounting of costs hasn't yet been presented, Councilman Alan Sohn said he believes it’s between $4 and $4.5 million.

There are serious problems with water infiltration from an underground stream that still exist, Sohn told Daily Voice.

He'd hoped the convince fellow council members to replace the building with a new one. Among other issues, Sohn argued, extensive remediation that had to be done for both molds and asbestos drove up the cost. Prior to the rehab, the building had been used for file storage for 17 years.

“When files had to be retrieved, two people in hazmat suits were required," he said.

"I don't know the precise cost," Katz responded, "but whatever it was is worth it to get that eyesore off the corner. I can't tell you have many complaints I've had from residents about the looks of that building at such a prominent place in town."

The finance department, DPW and municipal court will remain in the existing building.
