There are two three-year seats and a one-year unexpired term on the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
The candidates for the full Freeholder term are:
- John D. Mitchell (R) of Cliffside Park*
- Kenneth Tyburczy (R) of Ramsey
- Steven A. Tanelli (D) of North Arlington
- Tracy Silnz Zur (D) of Franklin Lakes*
- Richard Siegel (G) of Teaneck
The candidates for the expired seat are:
- Daisy Ortiz-Berger (R) of River Edge
- Thomas J. Sullivan (D) of Montvale
- Peter J. Rohrman (L) of Paramus
"It's about the only time and the only way that voters have a chance to see opponents face to face," said Lucy Heller, who serves as vice president of both the League of Women Voters of Bergen County of the Northern Valley League of Women Voters.
Attendees can submit questions to the moderator, and candidates will address their own points at the end. The forum will be held as long as both major parties appear, if they are on the ballot. If there is an imbalance in representation, the attending candidates are free to answer questions from the crowd. Candidates have up to one minute to answer questions. Moderators will remove questions that deemed to personal in nature. Members will glean for repeat questions, and limit one question per attendee.
The event at Bergen County Academies in Teterboro will be televised during the public forums, while the forum event at a later date in Fair Lawn will only be provided on television, because of past issues with hecklers, Heller stated.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. It neither supports nor opposes candidates or political parties. The 95-year-old group that derived from suffragists also has had male members since the 1960s.
