Police were looking for a bald man driving a red van with graffiti on the side when Officer Gerard Rosano stopped William Rusch, 41, after he pulled out of a Cedar Lane 7Eleven, Detective Capt. Dean B. Kazinci said.
Inside the red van, Rosano found a crack pipe and a container of coins taken during a recent burglary in town, the captain said.
Rusch, who lists a Toms River address and drives for a Hudson-County based flower company, was identified by homeowners who Kazinci said chased him off following break-ins on Wilmerding Avenue on Tuesday and on Pomander Walk on June 15.
He remains a suspect in at least four other residential burglaries, as well, the captain said. All took place within the past three weeks.
When not making legitimate deliveries Rusch “used his position to knock on doors to determine if residents were home,” Kazinci said. His motive: to support a crack habit, he said.
He’s being held on $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
