The first Muslim mayor in Bergen County history — in, of all towns, highly Orthodox and predominately black Teaneck — is Mohammed Hameeduddin..

Hameeduddin, who won a council seat two years ago, earned five of seven votes at the annual government reorganization meeting outside the municipal building Thuesday.

Councilwoman Lizette Parker, the town’s deputy mayor, could have becomoe Teaneck’s first black female mayor but was outvoted by council members –even though she was the panel’s top vote-getter among residents in May.

But all pledged to work together for the betterment of Teaneck. It won’t be easy, beginning with the council’s more than $6 million cut from the district school budget.

“In Teaneck, New Jersey, my religion never played a factor in people voting for me or against me,” Hameeduddin said. “That is a testament to the town that we live in.”

Adam Gussen, who won a second term in May, was elected deputy mayor with four votes. Gussen, Parker, Elie Katz and Yitz Stern all were sworn to four-year terms.

THE COUNCIL’s MAYORAL VOTES: Lizette Parker and Barbara Toffler voted for Parker, while Mohammed Hameeduddin, Adam Gussen, Monica Honis, Elie Katz and Yitz Stern voted for Hameeduddin.
