"This is how you hold a Christmas tree," he said, swinging it over his left shoulder before loading it onto a minivan.

McShane is back for the 20th year in a row, working with TJK Landscape, Inc. of Dumont.

There's rarely a dull moment at the shop — McShane is always smiling, always trying to make people laugh and always spreading Christmas cheer.

The outdoor nature guide says he's the perfect fit for the job, though that wasn't always the case.

"I was working for a guy up in Maine leading canoe trips," he said. "When the waters froze he asked me if I wanted to sell Christmas trees down in New Jersey.

"I was like, 'no.'"

At the time, McShane was living with his parents. He was just out of college.

But he wanted to do something for himself — he wanted a change.

"So then I was like, 'Let me go sell Christmas trees in New Jersey.'"

McShane has been coming back year after year with calloused hands and a smile on his face, eager to provide local families with the perfect tree.

The shop is open at New Bridge Landing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. "rain or shine — every day until Christmas," McShane said... "Duh."
