Thompson, 24, is an MD and MBA student at Rutgers University and a 2016 Olympic hopeful for the U.S women’s saber team.
She began fencing her freshman year at Teaneck High School after observing a demonstration by a high school fencing team. Her junior year, she joined the Peter Westbrook Foundation in New York City, which introduced her to the world of competitive and elite fencing.
Despite her limited fencing experience, Thompson was recruited by the Temple University fencing team and was offered an academic scholarship through the honors program. During her four years as a Temple Owl, she went on to become a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier, a Second Team All- American and the first four-time NIWFA Conference Champion.
She was the first student to receive the Temple University Student Athlete of the Year Award twice (2011, 2012). She currently has the record for the most wins on the saber team..
Following her graduation, not only did Thompson enroll in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, she also decided to dedicate the next four years to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. She began competing internationally for the U.S. women’s saber team.
Kamali begun the 2015- 16 season with a silver medal at the 2015 July Challenge in San Jose, Calif. and is ranked fifth in the country.
Kamali will return to medical school after the 2016 Olympics.
