At approximately 3 a.m., the Hackensack Fire Department’s 2nd Platoon responded to 200 Hackensack Ave., when janitorial staff reported a ceiling collapse, Capt. Kurt Nemeczek said. The collapse involved sections of skim coating and plaster in the auditorium ceiling—not structural components—and was caused by rainwater leaking through the roof.

Crews secured the utilities and closed off the affected area. The auditorium will remain closed until necessary repairs are completed. A contracting company had reportedly been working in the area in recent days.

Also on scene were the Bergen County Fire Marshal Tim Ferguson, the Hackensack Building Department, Bergen County Sheriff's Office, and Hackensack Police Department, Nemeczek said.

Bergen Academies is one of the most well-known and competitive high schools in the area, having been ranked the best public high school in the state by Niche and No. 3 best in the United States by Money Inc.
