Raymond L. Heller was the director of the band for 53 years. He died last September, at 86. The memorial concert has been in the works for the last several months.

After earning degrees in music education, Heller became a music teacher in the Rutherford school system. He also then got involved with the Rutherford Community Band and the Waldwick Community Band, playing trumpet.

Heller then became the band director for Rutherford High School, the music department supervisor and the leader of the Rutherford Community Band.

"He encouraged both young and old to come together to make great music together," the South Bergenite reported.

The concert is free, but the band -- a nonprofit, which will beginning its 75th season this June -- accepts free-will donations. Heller was the band's third director over the decades.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m., at the Rutherford High School Auditorium, at Elliot Place and Mortimer Avenue.
