Ridgefield Fitness Studio Unites With Habitat Bergen For Self Defense Class

RIDGEFIELD, N.J. — PEAK Performing Arts Center will host a self defense workshop in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity on Thurs., Jan. 28 in Ridgefield.

The 7:30 p.m. class at the Grand Avenue facility will raise funds for people who are looking for safe, protective housing.

"The class will focus on self-protection in all situations by learning how to avoid becoming a target, learning how to recognize a dangerous situation and how to drive off an attacker when in imminent danger,” Nicole Murphy, the marketing coordinator of Habitat for Humanity, told Daily Voice.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:

Tenafly Karate instructor Susan Klausner has been practicing karate since 1998. She is a third degree black belt, and has competed in tournaments around the world. 

In October 2015, she won the gold medal in the veterans' division at the Kimura Shukokai International European Karate Championship in Lucerne, Switzerland. Klausner trains and teaches at Tenafly Shukokai Karate school in Tenafly.

Christina Ioannides is a fifth-degree black belt. She started studying karate at age 9 while growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa. She continued her practice after moving to the United States at 17 years old.

She studied for many years with World Chief of Kimura Shukokai Karate Instructor Shihan Bill Bressaw, at Bressaw's Middlesex Karate in Edison. 

Ioannides has won numerous National championships and four World Tournaments, most recently in October 2015 when she won the gold medal for the Women's Open Division at the Kimura Shukokai European Karate Championship in Lucerne, Switzerland.
