Family Of Rockers Take Teaneck's Mexicali Live

LODI, N.J. — A Lodi-native family of rockers will take the stage in Teaneck at Mexicali Live on Fri. Jan 15 as "In Absentia" to entertain crowds with their cover of a well-known European music band.

Twin brothers Sean and Jason Sproviero of Hasbrouck Heights and their uncle Bob Sproviero of Washington Township will perform the music of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.

“I believe Lodi was the home to more guitar players than any other place on earth - there were tons of good guitar players,” said Scott Sproviero, the boys' father.

Bob Sproviero has always performed as a musician, taking up keyboards and bass, he said.

“This is an injustice - here is music that is well ahead in its value, complexity and emotion,” Bob said of Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.

“We said why don’t we turn people onto it in a tribute so," he said.

He said they had an excellent response from a previous Mexicali Live gig, and the venue agreed to another show.

"It's a nice atmosphere for experimenting and performing," Bob said.

“Imagine a collaboration of Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd and James Hetfield from Metallica,” said Scott Sproviero, who is the father of the 19-year-old pair of musician brothers. "They are a tribute band hoping to spread the music around New Jersey.”

Scott Sproviero, with his long hair tied in a ponytail, was known as the rock ’n roll judge in Lodi courtrooms — although he didn’t regularly perform music.

“Jason wanted to go to the School of Rock since the day it opened in South Hackensack,” he said. “Once a teacher gave him an article on it, there was nothing stopping him.”

Bob’s daughter Amanda, as well as Sean and Jason, make up the second generation of music in the family.

Aside from performing, the twins are now in sophomore year at University of Massachusetts Amherst and are studying electrical engineering.

"Our father, the judge, was an amazing talent," Bob said. "That's where the talent comes from."
