TEANECK, N.J. -- Asians who are uninsured can get no-cost medical screenings Saturday, Oct. 1 at a health fair in Teaneck.

Holy Name Medical Center is expecting more than 1,000 Asians at its 8th Annual Health Festival.

Participants will be able to get results of blood tests, meet with physicians and undergo additional screenings as part of the medical center’s event, organized through the hospital's Asian Health Services.

Most of the participants had their blood drawn the weekend of Sept. 24-25 and will be able to meet with specialists to review specific health concerns.

The health festival is held in Holy Name's Marian Hall from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The blood work tested for 35 markers, including cholesterol levels, anemia, diabetes, liver and kidney function and hepatitis B.

Some participants will go through additional screenings such as thyroid sonograms, digital prostate exams, eye tests, and hemorrhoid, dental and foot exams.

"Holy Name has become a national model in delivering culturally sensitive medical services for people of all traditions in the tri-state area," said Michael Maron, President and CEO of Holy Name Medical Center.

More than 85 physicians from New Jersey, New York and Connecticut volunteer to meet with participants, many of whom use the health festival as their only source of medical care.

"This is such an underserved population and we are glad to be able to provide these services," said Adam Jarrett, Chief Medical Officer, Holy Name Medical Center.

Asian Health Services (AHS) provides services to more than 60,000 people every year in the northern New Jersey region.

Holy Name's AHS was established in response to the growing Asian population in New Jersey and serves as the umbrella for the Korean Medical Program, the Chinese Medical Program and the Filipino Medical Program.

All of these programs have been designed with the same mission – honoring the uniqueness of every individual and delivering high quality care in a culturally-sensitive environment.

"The ability to access health care is the first step in maintaining good health," said Kyung Hee Choi, Vice President of Asian Health Services.

Since 2013, Holy Name Medical Center has helped more than 5,000 Asian families get health insurance by assisting them in signing up for coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

This is the third year bilingual hospital staff members, through Holy Name's Asian Health Services, worked with federal navigators to assist uninsured or underinsured Asian Americans get medical insurance.

Staff members who speak Korean and Chinese were on hand to help overcome language barriers many residents face when trying to enroll in a health plan through the computerized ACA system.

Holy Name Medical Center is located at 718 Teaneck Road, Teaneck.
