As of late last week, excavating to prepare for foundation-pouring was proceeding in spite of a thick cover of snow and frozen earth crust.
The new, drive through Walgreens replaces a restaurant, smaller stores, and gas station. Win Development LLC got Building Department approval at the beginning of November, and announced plans to begin construction the following week, building officials said Friday.
But the existing buildings had to be razed first.
The finished store will be almost 11,000 square feet and will feature Walgreens standard mix of high-volume, phone-automated and standard prescription service, personal products, drugstore offerings, food and household items.
It will be Teaneck’s second Walgreens. There is a store on Teaneck Road at State Street. There are also two CVS and two independent pharmacies on Cedar Lane, and another CVS on Queen Anne Road..
Pedestrian safety has been a concern in the area that is heightened since a man was killed at Cedar Lane and Garrison, several blocks east, at Christmas, and the township council has been discussing ways to improve safety along the business artery.
The new Walgreens is at the west end of Cedar Lane, near the Veterans Memorial Bridge to the east.
The Board of Adjustment approved the application in 2013.
