Retired Mansfield Township Police Sergeant, former firefighter and Board of Education member Charles W. Almer Jr. died Jan. 11 at at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phillipsburg. He was 85.

Born in Newton, Almer worked for the government at Picatinny Arsenal before becoming a teacher at Independence Central School in Great Meadows, his obituary says.

Almer had a passion for law enforcement and had retired as a Sergeant for the Mansfield Township Police Department, his obit says.

Meanwhile, he served on several school boards and was one of the “original members” of the Mt. Bethel Fire Department.

Almer was also a Mansfield little league coach who loved fishing, boating and had even attained his pilot’s license.

Almer is survived by his wife, Nancy (Heil) Almer; his daughter, Cynthia DeTommaso; his two sons, Jeffrey Almer and Charles Almer, III; as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the end of watch of our brother retired Sgt. Charles Almer Jr.,” the Mansfield Township Police Department wrote in a Facebook tribute.

“He dedicated his life to the people of this town and we couldn't be prouder to have called him one of our own. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family during this sad time.”
