Saddle Brook Photographer Documents Township's Memories SADDLE BROOK, N.J. — Many Saddle Brook memories over the years could not have been preserved as well without the help of JoAnn Brendel. Brendel, 62, became known as the township's unofficial photographer as she snapped shots at many of Saddle Brook's events and gatherings. "It's just about getting out there, taking pictures and hoping for the best," Brendel told Daily Voice. "It's great. Everybody loves it. They just say, 'Keep it coming.'" Police: Wayne Man Beat Puppy To Death With Chair WAYNE, N.J. — Police accused a Wayne man of beating a 6-month-old puppy to death with a kitchen chair. Police found the Husky puppy's blood strewn across the Travelo Drive home of 23-year-old John G. Varcadipone on Friday, Capt. Laurence Martin told Daily Voice. Varcadipone was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and assault, Martin said. He was being held on $75,000 bail at Passaic County Jail.

Young Ringwood Seamstress Crafts 'Purr-fect' Fundraiser RINGWOOD, N.J. — A Ringwood mother-daughter team found a way to keep cats happy and help a good cause. Erika Mathews and her 8-year-old daughter Willow Phelps make organic cat-knip toys, sell them and donate the proceeds to different charities. They started last fall. "It's been great," Mathews said. Wayne Boy Inspires Guardian Angel Program WAYNE, N.J. — Henry Catalano, 4, of Wayne, became a guardian angel for many families in northern New Jersey as he persevered through his treatments for a brain tumor. His aunt, Jenna Triano, came to his side last June to help pay for his medical bills. In six weeks she raised $20,000 through various donations and fundraisers. Garfield, Army Staff Team Up For Gym Class GARFIELD, N.J. — Garfield High School enlisted military help to make the most of gym classes. U.S. Army representatives will lead a part of gym class Wednesday mornings for the second year in a row, Assistant Director of Athletics Thomas Giuffre said. Lady Bowlers Band Together In Oakland OAKLAND, N.J. — For around 20 years a group of women have flocked to Oakland for a weekly bowling tradition. The league meets every Friday morning September through May at Holiday Bowl on Spruce Street and currently has 21 members. "It's a nice group of ladies," said Judy Solga, secretary and treasurer. Paterson Drug Sweep Nets 35 Arrests PATERSON, N.J. — A three-week drug investigation in Paterson led to 35 arrests, authorities said. Most of the people arrested Wednesday were buyers, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and acting Paterson Police Chief William Fraher said on Friday. Also arrested was Jaquwane Gray, 39, of Paterson, who was accused of running the drug ring on Broadway in the Fourth Ward. Paterson Kidney Transplant Mission Crosses Borders PATERSON, N.J. — A Paterson couple didn't have to look far across the family tree to find a new kidney for Espirman Ortiz but still needed to cross international lines to make it happen. Ortiz was diagnosed with kidney failure two years ago at the age of 29 and needed dialysis and a transplant. His younger sister, Marlene, volunteered to donate hers but since she lives in the Dominican Republic it was still difficult to complete. No Plans Yet For Future Of Lodi Kmart Building LODI, N.J. — Lodi's Kmart on Memorial Drive will close in around a month's time but Borough Manager Bruce Masopust said there are no definitive plans for the building's future yet. The Kmart opened in the late 1970s or early 1980s, Masopust said, but will close its doors in late April. Elmwood Park Students Take To Chess Club ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — Chess experts and beginners alike meet at Elmwood Park High School at least once a week to hone their skills.
