WAYNE, N.J. — A construction worker in Wayne suffered multiple burns in an explosion on Mack Street Sunday morning when he added gasoline to a barrel with smoldering debris, police said.
The victim, 56-year-old Anthony Orsillo of Newfoundland, was pouring gasoline into an oil drum when it exploded around 9:30 a.m., Capt. Laurence Martin said. Flames covered Orsillo and he was burnt on his hands, arms, face and chest, Martin said.
Neighbors heard the explosion and Orsillo's cries for help and put out the fire at the scene, Martin said.
Orsillo was treated and transferred to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, and then to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, Martin said.
Sgt. Donald Pavlak continued to investigate as of Monday, the captain said.
