Passaic Sheriff: Detectives Find Loaded Assault Rifle On Pair In Paterson

PATERSON, N.J. -- A tipster led Passaic County narcotics detectives to an ex-con and a companion who they said were carrying an assault rifle with a loaded high-capacity magazine during a Paterson traffic stop, authorities said Friday.

Detectives armed with the tip saw Luis Rivas-Clase, 28, of of Queens and Brian Peralta-Rodriguez, 20, of Paterson get into a tinted-window Mercedes that sped off Friday afternoon from 12th Avenue and East 19th Street, Sheriff Richard H Berdnik said.

They stopped the car for both violations and spotted the driver, Rivas-Clase, "moving about the vehicle," the sheriff said.

The passenger-side door swung open and Rodriguez tried to bolt, but the detectives cut him off, Berdnik said.

With that door open, "detectives were able to see a black compact assault weapon (Intratec AB-10 9mm Luger) on the floor of the vehicle," the sheriff said. "[It] had a high-capacity magazine loaded with 32 9mm rounds."

Both men were arrested and charged with weapons offenses --- including Peralta-Rodriguez being a felon (burglary conviction) illegally holding a firearm.

He also had an active criminal warrant out of Paramus.

"I want to commend the detectives involved in this investigation and arrests in moving quick to get these loaded, high-capacity weapons off our streets," Berdnik said.
