Michael J. Czyzyk, 40, was headed northbound on Water Street when he became distracted and crossed into the southbound lanes, Newton Police Lt. Robert E. Osborn Jr. said.

Czyzyk's Cadillac CTS hit a curb, a rock wall and shrubs before crashing into the pole outside of Hayek's market, Osborn said.

Czyzyk refused medical attention and was issued summonses for careless driving and failure to maintain lane. His car was towed and a court case is pending, police said.
