She was the daughter of Edward Barnes Sr. of Totowa and the late Nancy (nee Hartsough) Barnes (2006); and sister of Edward Barnes Jr. of Totowa and Erik Barnes of Cherry Hill.
Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Totowa for most of her life.
She was a sailor in the U.S. Navy based in Gaeta, Italy, serving as an information systems technician.
She was a 2014 graduate of Passaic Valley High School, where she played varsity field hockey.
Barnes graduated from boot camp Oct. 3, 2014. She graduated Information Systems Technician "A" School March 26, 2015. She reported to the USS Mount Whitney April 19, 2015. She qualified as an enlisted surface warfare specialist July 1.
