The Little Falls resident had been receiving dialysis treatments since January 2017. In May of that year, he contracted a blood infection that spread to his 21-year-old knee replacement.

Due to consequent surgeries, the kidney transplant was put on hold.

It's back on -- with a vengeance -- administered by his sister-in-law, Donna Tissot.

"Nick is a good hearted family man and a very dedicated friend," she told Daily Voice.

"He is kind, caring, understanding, inspiring and most of all funny.

"Nick has a huge heart and he's someone you'd like to know. Many people would tell you he's someone you can't help but like."

Sauter married his high school sweetheart Debbie Tissot, Donna's sister, in 1977. The two (PVHS Class of 1973) are best friends and have two children and three grandchildren together.

Sauter served as the vice principal, athletic director, football and track coach and teacher at PVHS. He is active in the food pantry at the St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Little Falls, helping many struggling families receive the assistance they need.

Last year, Sauter discovered he was in need of a kidney.

The family remains hopeful that they'll be able to find a kidney for Sauter so he can continue watching his family grow.
