A Plainfield man walked into a convenience store with a gunshot wound then collapsed on the ground Saturday night, authorities said Monday.

The 28-year-old man went into a Route 22 store in Green Brook Township, told the clerk that he had been shot, then collapsed just after 11 p.m., Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a joint release.

Medical crews treated the man at the scene before taking him to a local trauma center for emergency surgery. He is listed in stable condition, authorities said.

It is not clear where the shooting occurred or what the motive was, authorities said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Somerset County Prosecutors Office Major Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100 or the Green Brook Township Police Department at (732) 968-1188.
