SADDLE BROOK, N.J. — A longtime Saddle Brook choir director will call it a career when the music stops and the curtain falls at the high school's holiday concert Dec. 22.
Cindy Verost spent 22 years as Saddle Brook High School's choir director, but 2015 will be her last. An alumni of the school district herself, Verost said she enjoyed the chance to return and give back.
"It's a good place to work," Verost said of Saddle Brook High School. "I like the people I've worked with. They're good teachers, they're dedicated and I made a lot of good friends."
Both of Verost's sons performed in her choir while attending the high school, which she described as a career highlight.
Verost studied music at Montclair State University and New Jersey City University. Before Saddle Brook, she worked in Boonton and Paterson.
She also helped at various church ministries throughout her career.
From a young age music was a large part of Verost's life. Her father played in a band and helped give her some background.
"Both my parents liked to sing all the time," she said. "The familial influence put me here."
Verost said she hopes to travel the country after retiring, preferably somewhere warm.
Her last show with the high school performers starts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 22 in the Charles Broadhurst Auditorium. Alumni from the chorus will be there to perform and send Verost off in style.
Despite the finality of the performance, the veteran director said she keeps it in perspective.
"I don't think it will be too different than any others," she said of the concert. "It will just be the last one, that's all."
