Future Uncertain For Incoming Maywood High Schoolers

MAYWOOD, N.J. — Maywood school officials “must seek alternative remedies,” after rejecting the terms of a contract that would have allowed them to continue sending students to Hackensack High School, Schools Supt. Michael Jordan wrote in an email to parents.

Those remedies “are yet to be determined,” Jordan wrote in the letter dated Jan. 16, and obtained by Daily Voice. He blamed soaring costs for rejecting a final out-of-district contract offer from Hackensack.

"The Maywood BOE can no longer afford a tuition rate that is 20 percent of its operating budget as well as the added costs of high school out of district placements, and high school transportation," Jordan wrote in the email.

"There is no other recourse left but to reject the contract settlement," the email says.

An information session for parents is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Maywood Avenue School large gym.

After graduating from Maywood Avenue School, 250 students or so students have gone on to attend Hackensack High School -- along with those from Rochelle Park and South Hackensack -- through a sender/receiver contract that expired last June.

Both formal and informal talks were held in the hopes of negotiating a new contract -- without success, the superintendent wrote.

"Although the Maywood BOE had hoped to start and continue discussions in this regard," his email says, "it has not come to fruition and the final settlement agreement is deemed unacceptable."

The Maywood Board of Education now "must seek alternative remedies,” to provide "quality education" for high schoolers "at a cost that will not detrimentally impact the operation of its K-8 program," Jordan added.

“The board of education has not decided on the next step other than to at this time reject the final tuition offer,” Jordan wrote in a separate email to Daily Voice.
