ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — Elmwood Park students at St. Leo's School will use their math skills to raise funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The St. Jude's Math-A-Thon will include kids in Grades Kindergarten through 8, St. Leo's teacher Renee Healy said.

Participating students must find people to sponsor them in completing various math problems at home.

"There's excitement for it, you can see it," Healy told Daily Voice. "They all watch a video in class [about St. Jude's] and usually that pulls at their heart strings."

The math work will be from Feb. 8 through Feb. 12. It covers the same material as St. Leo's curriculum and includes matching games, puzzles and more.

The Elmwood Park school has participated in the Math-A-Thon for eight years and raised more than $24,000, Healy said. They set a goal of between $2,000 to $3,000 each year but usually surpass it, she said

The school staff and students watch the donation level rise with a thermometer poster at St. Leo's keeping track of the amount.

Whichever grade raises the most money also earns a pizza party, Healy said.

Around 100 students usually participate each time.
