SHOUT OUT: A law enforcement delegation from New Jersey that included Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler returned from the Dominican Republic having forged new ties aimed toward a networking relationship with police there and the Dominican community here.

David Chong, whose United States Asian American Law Enforcement Foundation sponsored the trip, told Daily Voice that it created “a feeling of trust between the different countries and their agencies.”

“It is our mission to develop a close networking relationship between law enforcement representatives from the U.S. and other international countries,” he added. “Each of the delegates possesses the desire to foster this relationship.”

In addition to Kugler, the delegation included Al Della Fave, a retired New Jersey State Police major and former Port Authority police public information officer who is now with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and Paul Cell, the Montclair State University Chief of Police and 3rd Vice-President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

The trip took the delegates to in the capital city of Santo Domingo, the province of Puerta Plata and the town of Luperon.

They had various meetings, including with Major General Nelson Peguero Paredes, head of the National Police, who just recently was appointed to the top law enforcement position, Kugler said.

Members of the group will also toured the DR National Security Intelligence Agency and met with the National Military Command, he said.

The delegation was also given a tour of the Air Force Base and took part in a helicopter aerial patrol of Santo Domingo.

“I’ve had the privilege of attending other delegation visits, including to Asian countries of Korea, China, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand,” Kugler said. “These type of visits allow us to not only network with foreign countries law enforcement but also to learn the culture of the people.

“It reinforces to those of foreign heritages and cultures here in our area that law enforcement cares and seeks to welcome them here in our communities,” the chief said.
