Jeremiah Footman, 18, of Stamford, was stopped around 2 p.m. on West 36th Street. His clothing and hair were soiled with fresh dirt and cobwebs, and he also smelled of marijuana, police said.

A search turned up marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a screwdriver. Footman could not provide a valid reason for possessing the screwdriver, police said, and also said he had been visiting the friend's house.

When officers checked out the house, however, they discovered signs of recent forced entry. The homeowner confirmed that the damage was fresh and that Footman did not have permission to be at the home, police also said.

Footman has been charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, and drug offenses, including possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
