The man’s girlfriend called police at 1:50 a.m. and said he was threatening to hurt himself in an upstairs apartment on Hope Street following an argument, Lodi Police Sgt. Robert Salerno said this afternoon.

After setting up a perimeter, Lodi officers tried but couldn’t contact the distraught man, Salerno said.

They called in the Bergen County Police Department SWAT team and still couldn’t reach him, the sergeant said.

So they broke in “only to find that he male victim succumbed to injuries sustained from a self-inflicted bullet wound,” Salerno said.

Lodi police “extend condolences” to the man’s loved ones, the sergeant said.
