Joseph C. Slacke, 92, Longtime Saddle Brook Resident

SADDLE BROOK, N.J. -- Joseph C. Slacke, a 60-year resident of Saddle Brook, died on Saturday, March 25. He was 92.

Born in Manhattan, Slacke graduated from the Manhattan School of Aviation Trades and then joined the Army Air Corps. He was a gunner on an A-20 Havoc in the Pacific during World War II. 

He then was an inspector in the tool and die industry, and he retired in 1990. "He was an accomplished builder, woodworker, and a talented artist in acrylics and oils," information from the funeral home noted. He also built and flew radio-controlled airplanes and was a member of various local clubs. 

"He was known for his wry sense of humor, his honesty and his perpetual search for the perfect potato pancake," the funeral home continued.

Slacke is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marion (Hunt); children Diane Lapsley of Flanders, Christopher of Durham, Susan Mansueto of Gig Harbor, Patricia of Easton and Kathleen of Saddle Brook; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded by his parents, James and Mary (Metzger) Slacke, and his brother, James.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Rd., in Fair Lawn. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 488 Saddle River Rd., followed by interment at George Washington Memorial Park, in Paramus.
