A system that is expected to produce heavy rain and, in low-lying urban areas, flooding has resulted in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch being issued for the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey.

The watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday. It was issued for Putnam and Dutchess counties at 1 p.m. and for for Westchester, Rockland, Bergen and Passaic counties at 3 p.m.

Storms are expected throughout the area at various times Thursday and may produce strong wind gusts during the afternoon and evening, according to the Weather Service.

Cloud to ground lightning is also possible. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm, and the National Weather Service advises seeking shelter inside a car or building.

The warm temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend when highs are expected to hover in the upper 80s and low 90s.
