The 11-person Mid-Westchester 16u Maccabi baseball team headed to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to defend its 2014 title.
Other participants included 27 other members from the Mid- Westchester JCC , including teams competing in Girl's volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis, and Boy’s lacrosse and soccer.
The annual games were attended by 1,500 Jewish athletes from both the United States and other parts of the world. 16u Baseball had a small five team division, but it was a strong and experienced group.
Participating teams came from Canada, Detroit, South Jersey and Mid-Westchester, and the fifth, Ft. Lauderdale, had a reputation to be feared.
Coach David Katz noted that every player on the team had a key at bat or play in the field, leading to the team's Pool and Play-off victories.
He also gave a special call out to the team’s catcher, who caught flawless play-off games, picked up a number of third ball strikes in the dirt, had no passed balls and kept both opponents to only one steal in the two critical games.
Coach Katz noted also that the boys had a great time both on and off the field.
Beyond an exceptional baseball time, the group built great friendships among themselves and with players from other teams that will continue well past the Maccabi experience.
The 2016 games will be held in St. Louis the week of July 31 to Aug. 5; and in Stamford, Conn., the week of Aug. 7 to 12. Tryouts for all sports will take place in early 2016.
