EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants Tight End Daniel Fells contracted MRSA, according to ESPN.com.

Fells had been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to what officials called a staph infection on Monday. While MRSA can often be serious and potentially fatal, Fells is expected to be okay, ESPN.com reported.

The team's East Rutherford facilities have been scrubbed as a precaution.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria that's become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections.

Most MRSA infections occur in people who've been in hospitals or other health care settings. MRSA often begins as a painful skin boil. It's spread by skin-to-skin contact.
