EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- In late May, Alfred S. Faust Elementary's school nurse Kristen Webb presented the East Rutherford Board of Education with the Asthma Friendly Award her school had earned.

Asthma is a chronic disease in which the airways of the lungs become swollen or inflamed, and it can make it difficult to breathe. It is a serious condition which can't be cured but it can be controlled. This award was given in recognition of the school's efforts to enhance the quality of education for students and staff that face the challenges of this disease.

The school completed the six steps towards establishing an asthma-friendly school environment. These included online classes, quizzes, signing pledges and attending a conference with a team of employees that included Webb, Pat Monks, Tracy Vanasco and Amanda Alberta.

These six steps support efforts to be in compliance with state laws for asthma management and good indoor air quality. Schools play a major role in keeping children with asthma safe, healthy and actively involved in everyday activities.

With support from Principal Regina Barrale and Board of Education, Faust School has become part of the mere 15 percent of schools in New Jersey that qualify for the award.
