The 49-year-old East Rutherford woman said she stopped for the pedestrian, who was crossing Valley Brook Avenue near Chase Avenue, around noon Monday, Lyndhurst Police Chief Jim O’Connor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
The cyclist tried steering around her, then spun out to avoid hitting the pedestrian, she said.
His bike — similar to the one pictured above — stalled and he began pounding on her window, shouting obcenities and threatening to kill her, the woman said.
“I was terrified,” she told police. “I was never so scared in my life.”
The woman said she tried hitting her OnStar panic button but turned on her cellphone instead. She said she was scrambling to get out her phone when the cyclist ripped off her mirror, got back on his bike and fled.
Not thinking clearly, she began chasing him, O’Connor said.
The pursuit went through the north part of town, with her sounding her horn, before the motorcycle sped off onto eastbound Route 3, the chief said.
Police have area surveillance video showing the rider before the incident, turning from northbound Ridge Road onto westbound Valley Brook Avenue, O’Connor said.
“She’d be able to identify him,” he added.
He’s described as about 45-55 years old, with some facial hair and wearing a half helmet and a black jacket with an insignia on the back.
The bike is a flat-black Harley Davidson with a fairing and a short windshield and fiberglass saddle bags — possibly a Road King or a Dresser.
