Kearny PD: Man With BB Gun In Car Brought Heavy Police Presence To USPS Parking Lot

A man who dozed off with a BB gun in his car was taken into police custody presumably as a precaution after a nearly hour-long standoff in the parking lot of a Kearny United States Postal Service facility Tuesday, authorities said.

A person reportedly armed with a gun was inside a vehicle at 1200 Harrison Ave., which is known as the Greater Newark Processing and Distribution Center, around noon bringing a large contingent of law enforcement including State Police to the scene shortly after noon.

Police later determined a man had fallen asleep in a parked vehicle in the lot of the facility while in possession of a "pellet or BB gun." There had been no threat to the public, police also said.

The incident occurred in the massive facility's parking lot and employees inside the building were safe, USPS spokesman George Flood said.

A Kearny police spokesman said the person was taken into custody shortly before 1 p.m. No one was injured, Kearny police also said.
