"When [Stephen's] name comes up, the same words envelop the conversation … kind, caring, always volunteering, humble, respectful, conscientious," Middle School Dean of Students Sarah Rand said.

Rand added that Mayer "has found a balance between having fun, being light-hearted and playful, while being 100 percent committed and connected to the people he is with and the environment he is in," whether it’s in sports, in the classroom, art studio or volunteering his time during lunch.

His coach says, “I never heard or saw him be anything other than really positive in his interactions with his teammates. That, combined with his skill and experience, puts him into the category of positive leadership that really makes a big difference on a middle school team.”

Sports are a love of Mayer's whether it is in playing or in cheering on his New York teams. This sense of loyalty is one of the many wonderful qualities of this young man’s character and "we are honored to have him as part of our middle school community," Rand said.

One of his teachers shares, “He is a truly genuine boy, with an honest and agreeable nature. With this young man, what you see is what you get. He has great character.”
