New Jersey's Jennifer Contreras was one of the victims killed Tuesday, April 8 when the roof of a popular nightclub in the Dominican Republic came crashing down during a concert, according to her brother Anthony, of Passaic.
“My beloved sister, Jennifer C. Contreras, was a victim of the tragedy from negligence at Jet Set Night Club in Santo Domingo,” Anthony Contreras wrote on a GoFundMe launched to help bring his sister’s body back to the U.S.
Jennifer had flown to the island to celebrate both her birthday and that of a family friend. She was also there to take a certification course in eyebrow micropigmentation — the latest step in launching her beauty business, her brother said.
More than 220 people were killed and nearly 190 pulled from the rubble after the roof caved in at Jet Set nightclub during a live performance, according to The New York Times. Dominican authorities ended the search Thursday, April 10.
Fox News says Jennifer was 24 years old and is from Passaic.
“Jennifer was the most kind hearted, loving, and soft person,” her brother wrote. “She was an incredible daughter, sister, friend, cousin, and more.”
Now, her family is facing a second heartbreak — figuring out how to bring Jennifer home.
“Because Jennifer’s remains are in the Dominican Republic the financial burden of the logistics, mortuary services in both countries, and funeral services here in United States has put a stress onto us and our family in this difficult time,” Anthony wrote. “We ask that you pray and worship for my sister and our family at this time.”
By Friday morning, more than $28,000 had been raised toward the $35,000 goal.
