RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Ridgewood resident Bowie Kuhn (October 28, 1926 – March 15, 2007), who would have turned 90 today.

He was the fifth Commissioner of Major League Baseball (1969-1984) and was a Wall Street lawyer.

He also served as legal counsel to MLB both before and after his term as commissioner.

During his tenure as commissioner, attendance, salaries and salaries went up, he cracked down on drug use in the league, and players won the right to free agency.

Kuhn sold his house in Ridgewood in 1990 following problems with his law firm, and relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where he remained until he died.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008, after having been elected by the Veterans Committee.
