RIDGEWOOD, N.J.– Ridgewood’s Kate McDonnell isn’t your average second grader — she’s also an entrepreneur.

The Willard Elementary School student began her glitter tattoo business after two days of planning in July. With help from her parents, Patrick and Anne McDonnell, and her brother Joe, 9, Kate set up shop outside of her school.

"Then, poof!" said Kate of her stand's success, which had close to 50 visitors in its first day.

"The Girl With Glitter" has become just that at school.

"I was really tired," Kate said. "My brother had to help me."

Kate's mom is an entrepreneur herself, and recently launched "Ruff Runners" — a local dog running business.

With Joe as her business manager, Kate has honed her craft at a half dozen birthday parties, a Halloween party and has a communion party booked for May.

Customers select a design and the location they want the temporary tattoo.

Kate has about 200 designs to offer her customers, unicorns being the most popular one, she said.

Next, customers choose from roughly 20 hypoallergenic glitter colors while Kate applies body glue and dashes on some glitter.

“It’s definitely not like getting needles in your skin,” Joe quipped.

Lastly, Kate peels off the sticker to reveal the design, which lasts up to a week, she said.

The pricing varies by party size, Anne said. Glitter tattoos cost $4 per child – the birthday boy or girl is free – at parties of up to 12 children. Then it’s hourly rates for parties of 25 people or more.

“I made $172 in one day,” the soccer-playing Kate excitedly said.

“We cover the cost of supplies and then donate the rest,” Anne said.

This month, the siblings will be donating $100 to Ferndog Rescue Foundation, Joe said.
