UPDATE: The 45-year-old dump truck driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter as authorities say he was on his phone at the time of the accident.

A man was killed in a fiery crash with a garbage truck before dawn on Monday, May 8, Pequannock Police have confirmed.

The crash occurred on Route 23 north near the intersection of Alexander Avenue just before 5:20 a.m.

The victim was driving a 2020 Chevy Traverse when he collided with a garbage truck, police said.

The garbage truck driver worked alongside a Good Samaritan to remove the unconscious man from the Chevy before police arrived and found both vehicles up in flames.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 23 north remained closed as authorities investigated the crash, police added.
