RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Kilwins is celebrating two years of making old-fashioned sweet treats in Ridgewood with 12 hours of promotions Saturday .

Kilwin the Moose, the mascot of the 69-year-old company, will make an appearance in the afternoon.

“We’d like to give back to the community and say thanks,” said owner Philip Davis.

The store’s success, he explained, has to do with its two distinguishing features — offering customers a sensory experience and providing them as interactive an experience as possible.

Even from the street in Ridgewood's downtown, Kilwins is a bath for the senses. Its fudges, candied apples, marshmallow pops, handcrafted chocolates, waffle ice cream cones, and much more are made in the front of the shop.

Drawn by the aromas, passersby stop to look and taste the samples given out on the street.

The store’s credo is old-fashioned — make everything from scratch with quality ingredients, on site, and in full view.

“There’s nothing wrong with packaged products,” Davis said, “but we have a different point of view.”

Kilwins also makes its own 32 ice creams, some in signature flavors, such as sea salt caramel and toasted coconut.

Other flavors are seasonal. Trending now is double peanut butter pie, Georgia peach (with real peaches), strawberry chunk (with real strawberries), and the ever-popular S’more.

“The S’more ice cream is a vanilla base with marshmallow and chocolate-covered grahams,” Davis said. “We make our own marshmallows.”

In a nutshell, Kilwins strives to make itself an experience, not just a store.

The chain, started in 1947, has 104 locations nationwide.
