A suspect has been apprehended after reportedly being shot by responding officers during a deadly mass shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee that has resulted in at least two deaths and multiple other injuries.

The incident happened around noon Thursday, April 17, at one of the busiest places on campus, in the area of the student union.

"Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures," the shelter-in-place alert stated.

CNN, citing law enforcement sources, reported just after 2 p.m. during its live coverage that two people were killed and at least six individuals have been hospitalized.

In a news conference at 4:30 p.m., Tallahassee Police confirmed the two fatalities, and said neither of the victims killed were Florida State students.

The condition of the suspect has not yet been released.

CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller described the suspect being local to the Tallahassee area. There are not believed to be any other suspects, CNN reports. Authorities later announced that the suspect is an FSU student.

Three guns were discovered on campus: a handgun found on the suspect, another in the suspect's vehicle, and a shotgun in the student union, according to CNN.

Around 1 p.m., Florida State issued a new update on social media. It said: "Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information."

The announcement noted that, "All classes and university events including athletic events scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2025, have been cancelled. Individuals not already on the main campus at this time should avoid coming to the Tallahassee main campus."

Florida State has an enrollment of over 43,000 students.
