Edwin B. Coreas, 30, of Bogota, was pronounced dead at the scene after his Isuzu box truck was involved in a chain-reaction crash on Thursday, March 6, at approximately 6:20 p.m., according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

The Hasbrouck Heights Police Department responded to the four-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes near Franklin Avenue, along with the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department and other emergency responders, Musella said.

Multiple victims in the other vehicles were transported to a local hospital with varying degrees of injuries, officials said.

A joint investigation was launched by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, and the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force, Musella said.

Investigators determined that Coreas’ box truck collided with another vehicle, triggering a chain reaction that resulted in four vehicles being involved, Musella stated. No criminal charges are expected, but authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, officials said.

The southbound lanes of Route 17 were fully closed as authorities worked the scene, with detours coordinated by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the NJ Department of Transportation, Musella said.

Musella thanked the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, NJ Department of Transportation, and multiple fire departments, including those from Hackensack, Little Ferry, and Wood-Ridge, for their response to the fatal crash.
