The crash, which involved four vehicles, happened near the intersection with Franklin Avenue in the southbound lanes around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, according to Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer.

One of the drivers was pronounced dead at the scene, while multiple others were rushed to an area hospital with varying degrees of injuries, Angermeyer stated.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Task Force was activated, and investigators from both the prosecutor’s office and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department remained on the scene late into the evening, officials confirmed.

The incident spanned approximately 500 feet down the southbound lane of Route 17, according to Hasbrouck Heights firefighters. Due to the severity of the crash and multiple entrapments, the Wood-Ridge Fire Department and the City of Hackensack Fire Department were requested for assistance.

Three patients required extrication, with one individual severely entrapped in their vehicle suffering fatal injuries and pronounced deceased at the scene, HHFD confirmed. Road closures and detours were put in place as authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, officials stated.

The investigation is being led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, under the direction of Officer-in-Charge Lt. Jeffrey Werner.
